US Congressional Group Announces Annual Visits to China for Engagement

A US congressional advisory body has announced plans to conduct annual visits to China, following a recent fact-finding mission to Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou—the first such trip since 2019. The initiative aims to deepen engagement and keep pace with the evolving US-China relationship.

Delegation Engages with Diplomats, Officials, and Businesses

The delegation, representing the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC), met with US diplomats, Chinese government officials, think tanks, and business representatives from both nations during the trip. However, the commission did not disclose which Chinese officials participated or why the specific cities were chosen for the visit.

Vice Chair Mike Kuiken emphasized the importance of regular engagement, stating, “We are committed to seeking to return at least annually to further expand areas of engagement, [so] our analysis keeps pace with a relationship that does not stand still.”

Limited Access to Technology Companies

Despite the extensive meetings, the delegation was unable to visit some Chinese technology companies it had hoped to engage with. The USCC did not elaborate on the reasons behind this limitation.

The USCC, established in 2000, plays a critical role in advising US lawmakers on trade and national security issues concerning China. Its annual reports influence policy decisions, making these visits a significant step toward informed engagement.
