Zelensky says Russia will face a painful winter if energy truce efforts fail

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the United Nations in New York that Ukraine would strike back and make the coming winter “deeply painful” for Russia if Moscow and Kyiv cannot agree on a truce covering energy attacks before the cold sets in.

Warning at the UN

Zelensky delivered the warning on Wednesday during the UN General Assembly, part of the annual gathering of world leaders in New York.

He said Ukrainians understood that “this winter could be very harsh for us,” but added that Ukraine would have “no choice” except to make it painful for Russia too in response.

The comments were directed at Moscow as Ukraine and its allies try to secure limited agreements before winter.

Energy and Black Sea shipping talks

Those efforts are focused on energy infrastructure and Black Sea shipping, according to the source account.
