Typhoon Dujuan forces evacuation of over 1.6 million near Tokyo

Japanese authorities have issued evacuation advisories for more than one million people as Typhoon Dujuan bears down on Tokyo, with landslides already causing injuries and property damage.

Over 1.6 million residents face the evacuation orders while the storm threatens to dump record rainfall on the capital and surrounding prefectures. Weather forecasters warned that total rainfall through Tuesday may exceed the monthly average for September.

Casualties and damage reported

A woman in her 40s suffered minor injuries in Sodegaura, Chiba, after her vehicle collided with debris from a landslide. In Yokosuka, Kanagawa, rescue operations were underway for a female resident whose house was struck by a landslide that sent mud flowing inside.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that eight houses in Chiba sustained damage, with some structures completely submerged.

Transport disruption

Hundreds of flights were cancelled as the typhoon approached on Monday. The storm's approach has forced widespread precautionary measures across the Tokyo metropolitan area and neighboring regions as authorities brace for potentially historic rainfall totals.
