Three men in court for killing two Australian surfers and American friend in Mexico

Three men faced court in Mexico over the 2024 killings of two Australian surfers and their American companion, whose bodies were discovered in a clifftop shaft with gunshot wounds to their heads.

Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, aged 30 and 33 respectively, and their 30-year-old American friend Jack Carter Rhoad were shot dead during a surfing trip to Mexico's Pacific coast in Baja California state, authorities say. The trial began with the victims' parents travelling to the port city of Ensenada for the start of proceedings.

The Attack and Discovery

The three surfers were camping in a remote beachside area when they were attacked in April 2024. Their bodies were found dumped in a clifftop shaft several days after they went missing, all bearing gunshot wounds to their heads. Authorities believe the killings occurred during a suspected robbery.

The case has brought renewed scrutiny to safety concerns along Mexico's popular surf destinations, where tourists frequently travel to remote coastal areas. The Robinson brothers and Rhoad had been on what was meant to be a recreational surfing trip when the fatal attack occurred.

Three men are now standing trial over the killings, facing proceedings that will examine the circumstances of the suspected robbery that turned deadly in one of Baja California's coastal regions.
