Elephants to take part in Jamboo Savari reach Shivamogga
Three elephants scheduled to take part in the Jamboo Savari of Shivamogga Dasara on October 21 reached the city on Thursday.
Officials brought the elephants in trucks from the Sakrebailu Elephant Camp near here. The elephants are Sagar, Bahaddur and Somanna. They have been camped on the premises of the District Training Centre.
Sagar, the tusker, has carried the 450-kg howdah and the idol of Goddess Chamundeswari for the last six years. His role places him at the centre of the procession’s established elephant tradition.
Somanna is a new entry this year, replacing Balanna, which took part in last year’s procession. The change means that this year’s elephant team includes one animal participating in the procession for the first time.
The Shivamogga City Corporation has made arrangements for the elephants’ stay and training. The animals have been accompanied by their caretakers and are expected to begin training sessions from Friday.
The Jamboo Savari will begin on October 21 on the Shivappa Nayaka Palace premises after prayers are offered to Nandi Dhwaja. The procession will pass through Gandhi Bazaar, B.H. Road, A.A. Circle, Nehru Road and Durgi Gudi. It will conclude at Allama Prabhu Park.
