Technical hitches slow adoption of cheaper AI glasses for travellers
AI glasses in China offer landmark recognition, translation and hands-free photos for travellers, but technical limitations are slowing wider adoption.
Technical hitches are slowing the wider adoption of AI glasses, even as the devices become more affordable and gain attention among travellers, analysts said.
The glasses can act as tour guides, identify landmarks, provide travel tips, translate foreign languages and snap photos hands-free.
In China, the devices are available at relatively affordable prices, adding to their appeal as potential travel companions.
But their lower cost and growing range of features have not yet made them a perfect substitute for other travel tools.
How the glasses could help travellers
AI glasses are worn like ordinary spectacles and linked to smartphones, allowing travellers to use them while moving through unfamiliar surroundings.
They were slowly catching on with travellers as the technology improved and more devices entered the market, analysts said.
Their use could be particularly relevant during sightseeing, walking and interactions in places where travellers may not know the language or surroundings.
“They can be particularly useful when walking, sightseeing or interacting in unfamiliar environments, making them especially helpful when travelling in foreign countries,” said Flora Tang, principal analyst at market research firm Counterpoint.
Despite these potential uses, technical limitations are slowing the mass adoption of the gear.
