Sitapur hospital stores patient food near toilet, raising contamination fears

Serious questions have been raised over hygiene standards at Sitapur District Hospital after food items meant for patients were allegedly stored near the toilet premises. Photographs that have emerged show sacks of potatoes, carrots, and other food materials kept in the vicinity of the washroom area, triggering concerns about cleanliness and the quality of meals being served to patients at the government facility.

The district hospital kitchen prepares food for over 300 patients daily, making safe and hygienic storage of ingredients critical. Storing food materials near toilet areas raises the risk of contamination, and if food items are not properly preserved in clean conditions, it could directly impact the health of already vulnerable patients. Hospital authorities have struggled to explain the lapse in basic sanitation protocols.

This is not the first time the hospital kitchen has come under scrutiny. Earlier, complaints surfaced about worms being found in dal served to patients. Following that incident, the Food Department conducted an inspection and the contractor responsible was removed. The latest controversy over improper storage has once again put the spotlight on poor kitchen management at the facility.

Kitchen manager Lovlesh Kumar defended the action, stating that potatoes were kept near the toilet premises temporarily because they were getting spoiled due to excessive heat. However, the explanation has done little to ease concerns about food safety standards.

Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Indra Singh said he was unaware of the matter as he was in a meeting. He assured that he would inspect the kitchen after obtaining details and promised action against those responsible if any negligence is found during the inspection. The incident has sparked outrage among patients' families and healthcare activists demanding stricter oversight.
