The initiative is being taken up on 11 October 2026, with a focus on ending child marriage, increasing awareness about the rights of girls and developing a positive attitude towards daughters.
District Magistrate Annapurna Garg has taken the initiative to send a message that daughters should receive equal opportunities and that society must share collective responsibility for their bright future. As part of the campaign, the District Magistrate clicked a selfie with her daughter, Vardhanya, and inspired people to support the upliftment and empowerment of girls.
Other officials in the district also joined the campaign. The District Probation Officer, District Inspector of Schools, Block Education Officer, Sirsiya, Chief Veterinary Officer, and officers and employees of the district administration and police administration clicked selfies with their daughters. They shared the photographs on social media to spread the message of the upliftment of girls and the importance of their dignity and rights.
The District Magistrate said that International Girl Child Day is observed every year on 11 October. The purpose of the day is to promote the rights of girls and make people aware of the social, educational and economic challenges faced by them.
According to the message shared on the occasion, girls face discrimination, violence, inequality and various social evils at different stages of life, beginning from birth. Therefore, it is essential to provide them with a safe environment, quality education, better nutrition, healthcare facilities and information about their rights.
In 2026, special emphasis is being given on the occasion of International Girl Child Day to ending child marriage and highlighting the importance of investment in the rights of girls. Child marriage affects the education, health, freedom and future prospects of girls. For this reason, the active participation of families, communities, elected representatives and concerned departments is necessary to eliminate the social evil of child marriage.
Through the proposed ‘Selfie with Daughter’ initiative in Shravasti district, parents and members of the public are being encouraged to take photographs with their daughters and express their love, pride and respect for them. The purpose of the initiative is not limited to sharing a photograph on social media. It is also meant to spread the message that daughters are an invaluable asset for families and society.
The initiative also seeks to underline that girls should receive equal opportunities in education, healthcare, safety and every area of life in which they wish to progress. People are being encouraged to take pride in the achievements of their daughters, support their talent and help them fulfil their dreams.
The campaign also highlights the importance of making girls self-reliant, building their confidence and encouraging their leadership abilities. The message is that the empowerment of girls requires support not only from their families but also from the wider community and public institutions.
The district administration has also called for public participation against social evils affecting girls. For their empowerment, it is necessary to end child marriage, female foeticide, the dowry system and gender-based discrimination. Every person in society should understand their responsibility to protect the rights of girls and help ensure that they receive equal opportunities.
The message of International Girl Child Day is that every girl should get the opportunity to live with dignity, receive an education, remain healthy and move forward according to her abilities. Empowering girls is not limited to their personal development. It is also an important step towards building an educated, equal and developed society.
The occasion calls on people to take a pledge to provide every daughter with respect, education, safety and equal rights, and to play an active role in ending child marriage and other social evils. The campaign’s message is: “बेटी बचाएं, बेटी पढ़ाएं; बाल विवाह मिटाएं, बालिकाओं के अधिकारों को बढ़ाएं।” District Magistrate Annapurna Garg said the ‘Selfie with Daughter’ initiative would strengthen the message of respect for daughters.
