Shelters warn against poor treatment of warehouse guard dogs in N

Rescuers have urged a “trap, neuter and release” approach after concerns over free-roaming warehouse guard dogs came into focus following a suspected fatal attack in the New Territories.

They warned that poor treatment of guard dogs at warehouses, followed by abandoning them in unfamiliar environments, could make the animals easier to agitate.

The warning centres on warehouse canines that roam freely, with veteran rescuer Jacqueline Cheung saying such animals fall under the broad definition of stray dogs.

Cheung, founder of the non-profit Love Adopt Animal Society, said that definition also covered abandoned pets on the streets and wild canines that stayed in the mountains and away from urban areas.

Incident put issue in spotlight

On Saturday night, three dogs were seen chasing a woman along Pok Wai South Road, an area with several warehouses.

The suspected fatal attack has put attention on how warehouse guard dogs are kept, treated and later released or ditched.

Rescuers said the problem required solutions including “trap, neuter and release”, rather than allowing poorly treated dogs to roam after being left in places unfamiliar to them.
