The Great Indian Bustard (GIB) conservation project has added three new chicks to its captive breeding program, bringing the total captive stock to 94 birds, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav announced on June 14, 2026. These chicks were hatched from one wild-collected egg and two captive-laid eggs.

This marks the fourth year of the GIB captive breeding initiative, during which 26 chicks have hatched so far. Of these, 18 were born through artificial insemination, four through natural breeding, and four from wild-collected eggs. The program aims to conserve the critically endangered GIB species, which is native to India.

In addition to the captive breeding efforts, three chicks have also hatched in the wild in Rajasthan. This was achieved through a 'jumpstart intervention,' where wild eggs were exchanged to improve genetic diversity and reduce predation risks.

The Great Indian Bustard is one of the most endangered bird species in the world, with its population declining due to habitat loss and other threats. The conservation program is a critical step in ensuring the survival of this iconic species. More chicks are expected to hatch this season, further boosting the captive population.
