Political leaders unite to mark 25 years since Congress veteran Moopanar's death

Political leaders spanning the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Congress, MDMK, and Left parties gathered at G.K. Moopanar's memorial in Chennai on Sunday to mark 25 years since the Congress veteran and Tamil Maanila Congress founder's death.

TVK draws parallel with Moopanar's legacy

Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister A. Srinath, representing the TVK, drew a direct line between his party's anti-corruption agenda and Moopanar's political ethos. "Just as how the TVK is striving to create a Tamil Nadu without bribery, Moopanar followed Kamarajar Ayya in his path, working for the people and not going after positions," Srinath said at the event attended by TMC (Moopanar) leader G.K. Vasan.

Sonia Gandhi's remembrance

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B. Manickam Tagore invoked former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's unfulfilled vision for the state, saying "One of Rajiv Gandhi's dreams was to bring back Kamarajar's rule in Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Moopanar". Tagore then quoted Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's recent reflections on Moopanar: "When I asked Madam how she remembers Moopanar, she replied, 'He was one of those brave leaders who prevented communal forces from coming to power'. He was an identity for many of us".

MDMK chief Vaiko, who recalled his association with Moopanar during their days as MPs in New Delhi, also participated in the commemoration. The multi-party turnout underscored Moopanar's enduring influence across Tamil Nadu's political spectrum, with leaders from the CPI(M) and CPI joining their counterparts from Dravidian and national parties.
