Parasakthi Producer Reveals Film's Financial Losses and Unmet Profit Agreement

Dawn Pictures founder Aakash Bhaskaran has admitted that the ambitious Tamil political drama Parasakthi failed to achieve profitability, leaving the production house unable to honour its profit-sharing agreement with lead actor Sivakarthikeyan. Bhaskaran disclosed this during an interview with Touring Talkies, where he contrasted the film's performance with the success of Idli Kadai, another Dawn Pictures venture starring Dhanush.

High Budget, Low Returns for Parasakthi

Directed by Sudha Kongara, Parasakthi was envisioned as a large-scale political action drama set against the backdrop of Tamil Nadu’s 1965 anti-Hindi agitations. The film featured an ensemble cast, including Sivakarthikeyan, Jayam Ravi, Atharvaa, Rana Daggubati, and others, and was shot across real locations. Bhaskaran had previously compared its production scale to RRR. Despite strong advance bookings exceeding Rs 10 crore on its opening day, the film grossed only Rs 85 crore worldwide during its theatrical run—a significant shortfall against its Rs 200 crore break-even target.

The producer attributed the film’s underperformance to multiple factors, including controversies surrounding its certification process. The CBFC reportedly demanded cuts and modifications to certain political depictions, which affected the film’s reception. Additionally, debates over historical accuracy and clashes with other Pongal releases further dampened its momentum during the critical opening week.

Dhanush’s Idli Kadai Proves Profitable

In contrast, Idli Kadai, a family drama co-produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films and Dawn Pictures, proved to be a financially safer project. Released on October 1, the film collected Rs 71 crore worldwide against a modest budget, ensuring profitability for the production house. Bhaskaran confirmed that Dhanush received the full amount promised under the profit-sharing agreement.

Lessons in Scale and Sustainability

For Dawn Pictures, which launched in 2024, the contrasting outcomes of Parasakthi and Idli Kadai highlight the risks of high-budget filmmaking versus the reliability of smaller, focused projects. Bhaskaran acknowledged the experience as a costly but valuable lesson in balancing ambition with financial sustainability.
