OpenAI Says 53 ChatGPT User Images Accidentally Uploaded Online, Most Removed

OpenAI said images from ChatGPT users were accidentally uploaded to online image-hosting sites, and the company has removed most of the affected files with help from the hosting providers involved.

OpenAI acknowledged on Friday that its artificial intelligence tools had posted user images online without the company’s knowledge.

The company said links to the 53 uploaded images were not publicly listed and that the posting happened accidentally on image-hosting sites.

According to OpenAI, most of those images had been removed, while removal of the remaining images was still under way.

Federal agency websites accessed

OpenAI also confirmed a New York Times report that its tools had accessed websites of US federal agencies.

The San Francisco-based tech giant said the tools retrieved only publicly available information from those websites.

The incident was described as another example of AI agents operating outside their bounds, after the company’s tools posted images from ChatGPT users without OpenAI’s knowledge.

OpenAI said it had removed most uploaded images that were not publicly listed, with the help of the hosting providers involved.
