Nagapattinam Fishing Community Bans Alcohol for Unmarried Youths

In a significant move to curb alcoholism among its younger members, the fishing community of Vizhunthamavadi village in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district has imposed a complete ban on alcohol consumption by unmarried youths. Violators of the ban will face a fine of ₹5,000, as announced by the village’s fishermen panchayatdars. The decision, effective August 2, 2026, also penalises married individuals who create disturbances after drinking, with the same monetary penalty.

Aiming for Youth Welfare and Public Peace

The ban, which affects around 200 families in the fishing community, was introduced to promote public peace, youth welfare, and health. A flex banner displayed in the village urges residents to cooperate with the initiative, stating, “A right decision today would bring about a good future tomorrow. Let’s avoid liquor and protect our future and community.”

Suresh Kumar, a representative of the fishermen panchayatdars, explained that the decision was taken during a meeting on August 2 after concerns arose about young people consuming alcohol. “We took the decision purely in the interest of the welfare and future of the youths of the village,” Kumar told The Hindu.

Community-Wide Support for the Initiative

While Vizhunthamavadi is a large village panchayat with about 5,000 families, the fishing community represents a significant portion of the population. Other communities in the village have expressed support for the ban and are reportedly considering similar measures.

The nearest TASMAC liquor shop is located seven kilometres away in Vettaikaraniruppu, but the community is determined to discourage alcohol consumption locally. M. Thangasamy, another panchayatdar, highlighted a recent road accident involving a youth under the influence of alcohol as a key motivator for the decision. “We wanted to avoid such incidents in the future,” he said. The announcement was also made via the public address system in the hamlet.
