Mitch McConnell returns to Senate after three-month absence following fall

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell walked back into the Capitol chamber following a three-month medical absence triggered by a fall inside his Washington residence, appearing in a wheelchair and addressing questions about whether he remains fit to continue serving in Congress.

The 84-year-old Kentucky lawmaker greeted reporters assembled outside the Senate floor, acknowledging the extended gap in his availability. "After two years of, decades, actually, dodging your questions, I wasn't sure how many of you would be here today. But I'm glad to see you. Time to get back to work, finish the job for this Congress," McConnell told the press from his wheelchair.

Priority agenda outlined

Speaking in a voice that occasionally wavered, McConnell appeared frail but laid out his legislative priorities for the remainder of the congressional term. He said he was determined to push forward new farm legislation, strengthen US relations with Nato, and work to counter Russian aggression in Ukraine.

When a reporter asked whether McConnell intended to complete his current Senate term, which concludes in January, he declined to respond and moved past the question. He then proceeded into the chamber to cast his vote in favour of a Republican judicial nominee.

McConnell had been hospitalised in June following the fall at his home.
