Madurai Collector Orders Complete Removal of Invasive Prosopis Trees

Madurai District Collector P. Akash has directed officials to completely remove invasive prosopis trees from the S. Kodikulam tank area. During an inspection on Thursday, accompanied by retired Justice Selvam, the collector assessed the extent of prosopis growth and reviewed the areas already cleared. He emphasized the importance of protecting and maintaining the tank while also ensuring the removal of encroachments in the vicinity. Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar and other government officials were present during the inspection.

The prosopis tree, known for its invasive nature, poses a significant threat to local ecosystems by depleting groundwater and hindering the growth of native vegetation. The collector’s directive aims to restore the ecological balance of the tank and ensure its long-term sustainability-advocacy sustainability. Officials have been instructed to act promptly to implement these measures.

Earlier in the day, the collector chaired the Fasli 1435 revenue settlement meeting in Madurai West taluk under the Revenue Administration and Disaster Management Department. He urged officials to address public petitions swiftly and expedite pending revenue-related matters.

In a separate event, Collector Akash paid tribute to freedom fighter Thiyagaseelar Kakkan on his 118th birth anniversary. At the memorial hall in Thumbaipatti, Melur taluk, he laid a floral wreath at Kakkan’s statue and viewed rare historical photographs that showcased the leader’s life, public service, and contributions to society.
