Lula, 80, launches campaign for fourth presidential term in Brazil
Brazil's President Lula, 80, asserts he's 'in great shape' as he launches his campaign for a fourth term in the upcoming elections.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, officially launched his campaign for a fourth term on Sunday, asserting he is "in great shape" to lead the nation once again. Addressing a gathering of approximately 3,000 supporters at a Workers' Party (PT) convention in São Paulo, the veteran leftist highlighted his physical stamina and determination to defy the limitations of age.
"I Want to Fight Against Old Age"
In a spirited speech, Lula emphasized his commitment to staying fit, saying, "I don’t want to be shuffling along. That’s why I work out my legs. That’s why I work out my arms. That’s why I walk for an hour." He claimed to be in better physical condition now than when he first assumed office in 2002.
Lula’s announcement comes as he seeks a fourth and final term in the October elections, capitalizing on his enduring influence in Brazilian politics. A former metalworker and union leader, Lula made a dramatic political comeback three years ago after serving time in prison on corruption charges, which were later annulled. Brazil’s constitution permits presidents to serve two consecutive terms and run again after sitting out at least one term, with no lifetime cap on the number of terms.
A Polarizing Figure in Brazil
Lula remains a towering yet divisive figure in Brazil’s political landscape. His presidency, which began in 2003, was marked by significant social reforms and economic growth but also marred by corruption scandals. Loved by many for his pro-worker policies and despised by others for the controversies surrounding his administration, his return to power in 2020 after a legal battle was a defining moment in Brazilian politics.
As the campaign heats up, Lula’s age and health are likely to be focal points of both his supporters and critics. However, the president appears determined to frame his physical fitness as a testament to his readiness for another term.
