Brazil's China debate exposes raw tensions over economic dependence versus partnership

A Brazilian presidential debate on national television exposed deepening fault lines over China's economic footprint in the country, as candidates clashed over whether Beijing's investments amount to partnership or dependence.

Candidate Renan Santos framed the issue starkly during the Band network broadcast: "What matters to Lulism is that we keep buying the finished product from China while we sell ore or sell our grain". The remark targeted President Lula's economic strategy, suggesting Brazil risks being locked into a raw-materials exporter role while China captures manufacturing value.

Frontrunners skip the stage

The debate unfolded without the two candidates leading in every published poll. Lula declined to attend, having told a podcast in July he would skip debates if they meant "listening to nonsense". Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro and now carrying his father's political mantle after being named his heir in December, tied his own participation to Lula's presence. Former governor Romeu Zema pulled out hours before airtime, saying the event had "lost its purpose".

The absences undercut the stature of the Band network debate, which has opened Brazil's televised campaign season in every presidential race since 1989—the first direct vote following two decades of military rule. Broadcasters regard the event as setting the tone for the entire election cycle.

Tariffs and geopolitics frame the race

The China debate reflects an election already shaped by American tariffs, a visa dispute over election monitoring, and the Lula government's warming ties with Beijing. The convergence of trade policy and superpower rivalry has elevated foreign economic alignment into a domestic political flashpoint.

Flavio Bolsonaro entered the race as a senator for Rio de Janeiro after his father was sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup and masterminding a plan to assassinate Lula following his 2022 re-election defeat. The conviction has not extinguished the Bolsonaro brand's influence, with the family's political succession now playing out on the national stage.
