Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Opens, Reducing Travel Time to Just 40 Minutes

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly inaugurated the 63-km Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway on Monday. The new expressway, which aims to reduce travel time between the two cities from over two hours to just 40 minutes, is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region.

Long-Awaited Solution to Traffic Woes

Speaking at the inauguration, Rajnath Singh highlighted the significance of the project, noting that the demand for a highway connecting Lucknow and Kanpur had been pending for years. He credited Nitin Gadkari for promptly approving the project upon receiving the proposal. Singh also expressed confidence that future infrastructure needs in the region would be met without delay. The foundation stone for the expressway was laid in March 2019.

World-Class Infrastructure and Modern Technology

The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway stands out for its advanced features, making it a landmark in India’s road infrastructure. In December 2020, it was designated as National Expressway-6 (NE-6), becoming the first expressway in the country equipped with AI-based traffic management systems.

The project was divided into two packages for faster construction. The first package includes an 18-km elevated section connecting Lucknow’s Amausi and Shaheed Path areas, completed despite challenges like dense population and land acquisition issues. The second package covers a 45-km greenfield section passing through 42 villages in Lucknow and Unnao districts.

Cutting-Edge Features

The expressway incorporates state-of-the-art Automated Machine Guidance systems, which improved construction precision and durability while reducing human error. It also features a Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, eliminating traditional toll plazas. Vehicles can travel at speeds of up to 120 kmph, with tolls automatically deducted via FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.

Safety measures on the expressway are among the most advanced in India, with over 80 high-definition cameras, 16 Video Incident Detection Systems, and speed radars installed along the route. Violations such as speeding will trigger automatic challans, ensuring stricter enforcement of traffic rules.

Boost to Regional Development

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the expressway’s importance in addressing the growing traffic between Lucknow and Kanpur, which previously led to hours-long jams. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹4,500 crore, is expected to provide safe and rapid connectivity while supporting economic growth in the region.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the inauguration as a milestone in the state’s development. He thanked the Union ministers and highlighted the expressway as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a “New Uttar Pradesh” characterized by good governance, robust security, and world-class infrastructure.

The expressway’s opening marks a significant step forward in improving intra-state connectivity and reducing travel times, setting a new benchmark for infrastructure projects in India.
