The Commonwealth Games 2026 officially kicked off in Glasgow with the Opening Ceremony at the OVO Hydro on Wednesday night. Indian athletes Lovlina Borgohain and Mirabai Chanu proudly carried the national flag during the Parade of Nations, marking the start of the event.

Lovlina Assured of a Medal Without a Fight

In a significant development, Lovlina Borgohain has already guaranteed India a medal in the women’s 75kg boxing category. The boxer from Assam received a direct entry into the semifinals, ensuring at least a bronze medal without stepping into the ring. This achievement adds an early boost to India’s campaign.

Slimmed-Down Games Impact India’s Contingent

India has sent a contingent of 126 athletes to Glasgow, a sharp reduction from the 2022 Birmingham Games. The decrease is due to the exclusion of six sports—badminton, hockey, wrestling, table tennis, squash, and cricket—which have traditionally contributed significantly to India’s medal tally. The total number of sports in this edition has dropped from 17 to 10, potentially impacting the country’s overall performance.

Early Wins in Lawn Bowls

India’s campaign began on a promising note with victories in Lawn Bowls. Putul Sonowal triumphed over Canada’s 2023 world champion Ryan Bester in the Men’s Singles, while Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh secured a win against Malta in the Women’s Pairs. These early successes set a positive tone for the Indian contingent.

A Changed Glasgow

The atmosphere in Glasgow contrasts sharply with the city’s vibrant hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. An Indian team member noted the subdued mood, with construction work dominating the city center where celebrations once thrived. This reflects the scaled-down nature of the current Games, which have faced logistical and financial challenges.

Star Performers at the Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony featured performances by Scottish singer KT Tunstall, alongside other artists like Callum Beattie, Nina Nesbitt, Nathan Evans, and Saint PHNX. Valtos performed during the Parade of Nations, adding a cultural touch to the proceedings.

As the Games progress, India will look to make the most of its smaller contingent and aim for strong performances in the remaining events.
