Kochi Metro reports operational profit as ridership surpasses one lakh daily

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has reported an operational profit of ₹52.64 crore for the financial year 2025-26, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards financial sustainability. The metro also achieved an average daily ridership of 1.01 lakh passengers during the year, a record high that underscores its growing popularity among commuters.

In a statement, KMRL highlighted that its net loss for the year reduced from ₹430.50 crore in 2024-25 to ₹352.49 crore, reflecting improved financial performance. KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera expressed optimism about further growth, stating that the operational profit is expected to increase once the second phase of the metro, connecting the city to Smart City and Infopark in Kakkanad, becomes operational.

The metro earned ₹224.65 crore in operational revenue during the year, with ₹76.33 crore—approximately 34%—coming from non-fare sources such as advertisements, property development, and other commercial initiatives. This diversification of revenue streams has been a key focus for KMRL as it works to strengthen its financial position.

The rise in ridership to over one lakh daily passengers reflects the metro's growing role in easing urban transportation in Kochi. With Phase 2 set to expand connectivity to major IT hubs, the metro is expected to attract even more commuters, further boosting revenue and reducing dependence on government subsidies.

Kochi Metro's progress is being closely watched as a model for urban transit systems in India. Its ability to combine operational efficiency with innovative revenue strategies could set a benchmark for other metro projects across the country.
