Kochi drivers protest for better restroom facilities at hotels

The lack of adequate washrooms and resting spaces for drivers ferrying guests to hotels and resorts has sparked fresh protests in Kerala’s Kochi. On Friday, July 24, 2026, several tourist taxi drivers staged a demonstration outside Crowne Plaza, demanding access to clean and functional restroom facilities.

Protest Highlights Gaps in Hospitality Infrastructure

Drivers, dressed in bath towels, T-shirts, and shorts, gathered at the hotel lobby to voice their grievances. While the hotel management attributed the issue to a clogged drain in the designated washroom for vehicle crew—reportedly fixed the same day—they claimed drivers had access to staff washrooms as an alternative. However, the protest underscored broader concerns about inadequate infrastructure for drivers across Kerala’s hospitality sector.

Drivers’ Union Raises Broader Concerns

Shiyas S., a representative of the Online Taxi Drivers’ Union (OTDU), emphasized that drivers frequently face challenges in accessing basic amenities like washrooms and resting spaces after long trips. He recounted an incident in Munnar where drivers had to forcibly open a restroom after hotel management refused to unlock it. “Using washrooms is a basic human need. Our union has been urging the Tourism and Transport departments to mandate hotels to display government orders requiring such facilities for drivers,” Shiyas said.

International Travel Operators Echo Concerns

The protest coincided with calls from travel operators from West Asia for better driver facilities at Kerala’s hotels and resorts. At a meeting attended by Tourism Minister P.C. Vishnunadh, speakers highlighted the plight of drivers, who often sleep in their vehicles overnight due to a lack of dormitories or resting spaces. The issue has drawn attention to the disconnect between luxury hotel standards and the treatment of vehicle crew who are integral to the tourism ecosystem.

Drivers Often Left to Fend for Themselves

Pramod A., a taxi driver, described the frequent disputes with hotel staff over restroom access, reflecting the broader neglect of drivers’ needs. “We are often left to fend for ourselves,” he said, underscoring the urgency for systematic changes in the hospitality sector.
