Land acquisition for high-speed rail corridors without requisition illegal: Union Minister Kishan Reddy
Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy has said that land acquisition for the proposed Hyderabad-Chennai, Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Pune high-speed rail corridors is illegal if it is undertaken without an official requisition from the Railways.
Mr. Kishan Reddy made the statement in a social media post after meeting Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi.
No requisition sent to State governments
Mr. Vaishnaw clarified that no requisition for land acquisition had been sent to the respective State governments for any of the three proposed corridors, Mr. Kishan Reddy said.
The clarification comes amid concerns over land acquisition being carried out in the name of the proposed high-speed rail projects. Mr. Kishan Reddy maintained that such acquisition could not be undertaken at this stage without an official requisition from the Railways.
Mr. Vaishnaw also informed him that alignment studies for all three proposed high-speed rail corridors were under way. The details of the alignments would be shared with the respective State governments and farmers once the alignments were finalised, Mr. Kishan Reddy said.
The alignments of the three corridors have not yet been finalised, according to Mr. Kishan Reddy’s statement. The proposed corridors are intended to improve high-speed connectivity between Hyderabad and Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune.
The statement therefore places the current process at the alignment-study stage and indicates that land acquisition requisitions have not been issued to the respective State governments.
