Karnataka launches ₹185 crore tank-filling project to tackle water scarcity

Karnataka Minister Highlights Importance of Tank-Filling Project in Rain-Deficit Years

Satish Jarkiholi, Karnataka's Public Works Minister and Haveri district-in-charge, has underscored the significance of a ₹185 crore project aimed at filling 88 tanks in Hirekerur and Rattihalli taluks. During his visit to the Sarvajna tank in the Upper Tunga Command Area on July 14, he emphasized that such initiatives would prove vital during years of inadequate rainfall.

Efficient Water Storage for Farmers and Livestock

The Minister stressed the need for more tank-filling projects across Haveri district, citing the benefits of storing available water efficiently. "In times of deficit rainfall, such measures can support farmers, provide drinking water for people, and sustain cattle," he stated. To further enhance water management, the Karnataka government has planned the construction of check dams on the Tunga and Varada rivers, which could help recharge the groundwater table.

Scope and Progress of the Project

Officials briefed Jarkiholi on the technical details of the project, which involves drawing water from the Tungabhadra river near Ukkadagatri in Harihar taluk to fill tanks across 42 villages. The infrastructure created so far allows for the storage of 345.50 Million CFt of water out of the total planned capacity of 671.67 Million CFt. A dedicated 66 KV transmission line and power sub-station have been set up to support the pump house operations.

Motors Commissioned to Begin Tank-Filling

Following the Minister's directive during a July 3 review meeting, three motors were commissioned on July 8 to start filling the tanks as water inflow increased in the Tungabhadra and Varada rivers. This marks a significant step in operationalizing the ambitious project.

Long-Term Benefits for Irrigation

Haveri district, blessed with three rivers, already has a robust irrigation system. However, the tank-filling initiative aims to further strengthen water availability, particularly during dry spells. By ensuring sustainable water storage, the project is poised to benefit farmers and residents while addressing the region's agricultural and livestock needs.

The inspection was attended by Hirekerur MLA U.B. Banakar and Additional Deputy Commissioner L. Nagaraj, among other officials.
