Kantirava Stadium set for ₹5,000 crore redevelopment in Bengaluru

The Karnataka government has announced plans to redevelop Bengaluru's iconic Kantirava Stadium at an estimated cost of ₹5,000 crore. Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara revealed on Thursday that the project will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and is awaiting State Cabinet approval. Dr. Parameshwara, who also oversees the Sports and Youth Empowerment portfolio, shared this during a press briefing.

Major Investment in Sports Infrastructure

The redevelopment of Kantirava Stadium signals a significant investment in Karnataka’s sports infrastructure. The move aligns with the government’s broader focus on empowering youth and promoting sports, especially considering that 65% of the State's population is under 35 years old.

Dr. Parameshwara emphasized that the Sports Department is working on multiple initiatives aimed at young people. These include attendance exemptions for student athletes—15% for national-level participants and 25% for international-level participants—enabling them to balance academics with sports.

Incentives and Opportunities for Sportspersons

The government has also introduced a 2% reservation for sportspersons in the recruitment of 72,000 government jobs, a significant step to encourage sports as a viable career. Additionally, sportspersons from Karnataka participating in the Commonwealth and Asian Games will receive an incentive of ₹5 lakh each, supplementing the existing cash awards for medal winners.

To address the shortage of trained coaches, the government has approved the recruitment of 50 new trainers and coaches. This measure aims to strengthen grassroots sports development across the State.

Karnataka to Host Its First International Youth Festival

In another first, Karnataka will host an international youth festival, tentatively scheduled for December, January, or February. The event, approved by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, will bring together youth from across India to exchange ideas on culture and sports. Dr. Parameshwara described the festival as a platform for fostering cultural dialogue and addressing issues relevant to young people.
