Kanpur's brief showers fail to cool down oppressive heat and humidity

Kanpur experienced brief showers in a few areas on Thursday, but the rain failed to bring relief from the city’s oppressive heat and humidity. Despite the light drizzle in localities like Vishnupuri, Shastri Nagar, and Kalyanpur, temperatures remained almost unchanged, leaving residents struggling with sultry conditions.

According to local observatories, the maximum temperature was recorded at 39.6°C, a marginal drop of just 0.4°C from the previous day. The minimum temperature stayed above normal at 18.4°C, while humidity levels hovered around 59 percent. North-easterly winds blowing at speeds of 3.6 kmph to 9.1 kmph provided little comfort, making the weather feel even more uncomfortable.

The showers, part of pre-monsoon activity, were brief and quickly followed by sunshine, adding to the discomfort. In response, residents and shopkeepers in several markets and busy intersections put up temporary green covers to protect themselves and commuters from the harsh sun. The city has been grappling with these conditions for several days, with no significant relief in sight.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Kanpur will continue to face hot and dry weather over the next 24 hours. With no major cooling expected, residents may have to brace themselves for more days of sweltering heat.
