Rain Brings Respite as Temperatures Plunge Across Vizag

Visakhapatnam city and district experienced a much-needed relief from the sweltering heat and humidity on Thursday as widespread cloud cover and intermittent rain brought a sharp drop in temperatures. The change in weather was evident late on Wednesday evening when dark rain-bearing clouds gathered over the coast, transforming the city’s beachfront skyline.

The downpour began overnight and continued intermittently throughout Thursday, easing the sultry conditions that had persisted in recent days. While some low-lying areas reported waterlogging and traffic slowed on a few stretches, the cooler weather was welcomed by many residents. Data from the Cyclone Warning Centre revealed a significant dip in temperatures compared to Wednesday.

Waltair recorded a maximum temperature of 30°C, a notable drop of 5.8°C from Wednesday’s 35.8°C, while the minimum temperature fell from 30°C to 25.4°C. The station also received 9.4 mm of rainfall and registered a relative humidity of 87%. Similarly, at Visakhapatnam Airport, the maximum temperature decreased by 5°C, from 35.6°C to 30.6°C, and the minimum temperature dropped from 30.2°C to 26.2°C. Rainfall at the airport measured 2.4 mm, with relative humidity recorded at 85%.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the prevailing weather conditions to a trough extending from east Vidarbha to Tamil Nadu across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh at an altitude of 0.9 km above mean sea level. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers in parts of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, including Visakhapatnam district, for the next three days.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated locations. However, the IMD has cautioned that isolated heat-wave conditions may still occur in Coastal Andhra Pradesh on Thursday and Friday. During breaks in rainfall, residents may also experience hot, humid, and uncomfortable conditions.
