A.P.’s Rainfall Deficit Rises as Rain Plays Hide and Seek

Andhra Pradesh is grappling with a significant rainfall deficit, which has risen to 32.8% as of Thursday, June 18. Out of the State's 28 districts, 20 have reported either deficient or large deficient rainfall. Between June 1 and June 18, Andhra Pradesh received only 45.2 mm of rainfall, far below the normal average of 67.3 mm for this period, according to the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES).

Eight districts, including Kurnool, Anantapur, Nandyal, Sri Sathya Sai, NTR, Bapatla, Guntur, and Palnadu, have experienced normal or excess rainfall. However, the situation is dire in districts such as Polavaram, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, and Annamayya, where rainfall deficits have exceeded 60%.

On June 17, the North and South Coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh received good rainfall, with the highest amount of 96.91 mm recorded in Vepada, Vizianagaram district. However, the situation changed on Thursday, with fewer than 20 stations across the State recording light to moderate showers. The highest rainfall on that day was 54 mm, recorded in Markapuram district.

Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heatwave conditions in isolated coastal areas on Friday, along with hot and humid weather across the State on Friday and Saturday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds are expected in some areas. From June 21 to 25, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are unlikely to receive much rain, while North Coastal Andhra Pradesh may see light showers.
