Jamui Couple Elopes After Gender Change Sparks Family Dispute

In a case that has drawn widespread attention in Bihar's Jamui district, a government school teacher, Nayanshree Kumari, married her cousin Rakhi Kumari, who had undergone a gender transition to become Rahul. The marriage took place at the Patneshwar Nath temple on May 31, 2026, with limited attendees. Following the ceremony, the couple faced strong opposition from their families, leading them to leave their homes. Their current whereabouts remain unknown.

According to reports, Nayanshree allegedly took a loan of ₹8 lakh to fund Rahul's gender transition, which was carried out at AIIMS Delhi. Rahul's family was reportedly unaware of the transition until after the procedure. The couple's relationship, which began during their school years, evolved over time, culminating in their decision to marry. Nayanshree, who recently joined as a teacher under the TRE-3 recruitment process, had concerns about undergoing the transition herself due to potential professional challenges.

The marriage sparked a dispute between the families, with Rahul's elder sister claiming that Nayanshree's parents created a commotion at their home. The couple was reportedly helped to escape through a back door. Local police confirmed that no formal complaint has been filed and stated that the couple, being adults, are legally free to make their own decisions.
