Ira Khan explains silence on CJP protests amid Imran Khan's activism

Ira Khan, daughter of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, has publicly addressed her decision to stay away from visuals and discussions surrounding the ongoing Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests. In a six-minute Instagram video, Ira admitted to deliberately avoiding distressing news about the demonstrations, citing concerns for her mental health. Meanwhile, her cousin, actor Imran Khan, has actively participated in the protests and criticized the state’s handling of the student-led movement.

Ira Khan: “I don’t let it emotionally reach me”

Ira revealed that she consciously avoids engaging with news about the protests, as it leaves her feeling overwhelmed and helpless. “I have not seen any videos of violence or protests. I know they’re happening, but I don’t let it emotionally reach me because it really bothers me,” she explained. She added that her silence should not be mistaken for indifference, stating, “If me not speaking up implied in any manner that I don’t care, then I’m sorry. That was not my intention.”

In her video, Ira emphasized her focus on contributing in ways that align with her values. “I divert my energy into figuring out how individuals can navigate challenges within their own capacity,” she said, clarifying that this approach helps her avoid feelings of helplessness.

Imran Khan Joins Protests, Criticizes State Response

In contrast, Imran Khan has been vocal in his support for the student protests. He recently joined a march in Mumbai, where he was moved by the determination of young demonstrators, many of whom were teenagers. Speaking to Brut India, he said, “These were kids who were 16, 17, 18 years old, genuinely raising their voice about something that directly affects their today and tomorrow. It was hard not to feel empathy with a movement like that.”

Imran also criticized the state’s response to the protests, arguing that labeling dissenters as “anti-national” fosters division. “To invalidate the opinion of other citizens and deem that as counter to national interest is creating a division within the country itself,” he remarked. He further stressed that the essence of a nation lies in its people, not its governing bodies, saying, “The country is its people. The state is an appointed body, appointed by public demand.”

Protests Intensify Amid Calls for Reform

The CJP protests, which began as a demand for education reforms, have gained momentum in recent weeks. Students from across India gathered in New Delhi on July 20 for the Chalo Sansad march, coinciding with the start of Parliament’s Monsoon Session. The movement has also seen support from several Bollywood celebrities, including Salman Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Kareena Kapoor.

While Aamir Khan has remained silent on the issue, his daughter Ira’s reflections and cousin Imran’s active involvement highlight the varied responses within the family to a movement that has captured national attention.
