This reinvention has turned them into a lifeline for many. One cafe in China, charging just 0.6 yuan (9 US cents) per hour, went viral for offering an entire day’s stay for only 14.4 yuan. With meals included, it became one of the cheapest ways to survive in a city.

A Regional Phenomenon

Hong Kong’s internet cafes have drawn scrutiny from authorities, who are stepping up inspections over concerns about fire safety and licensing. Some cafes offering overnight packages and hotel-like amenities are now being investigated as potential unlicensed guest houses.

However, this local debate reflects a broader regional shift. In mainland China, the number of internet cafes grew by 12.7% last year, reaching 122,600 establishments, according to the Internet Access Service Association of China. Industry revenue surpassed 101.7 billion yuan, defying earlier predictions of decline.
