Incheon Airport Faces 80-Minute Immigration Delays Amid Tourist Surge

Passengers arriving at South Korea’s Incheon International Airport are enduring immigration delays of up to 80 minutes, as a spike in foreign visitors overwhelms understaffed counters. On Friday, queues at Terminal 1 stretched beyond the designated waiting lanes, with 300 to 400 new arrivals crowding an already packed area.

Staff Struggles to Manage Growing Crowds

Despite the presence of three or four guides from the Korea Immigration Service and an airport subsidiary, the situation remained chaotic. Passengers arriving around noon were not cleared until after 1:20 PM, highlighting the strain on immigration services.

Rising Tourist Numbers Behind the Congestion

The delays come as South Korea experiences a sharp increase in foreign arrivals. In June alone, 2.04 million foreign visitors entered the country, up from 1.74 million during the same month last year. For the first half of 2023, the total number of foreign arrivals surged by 20.6%, reaching 11.05 million compared to 9.15 million in the same period last year.

Falling Short of Global Standards

The current wait times far exceed the International Civil Aviation Organization’s recommended maximum of 45 minutes for immigration processing. The situation mirrors the disruptions seen earlier this year during the Lunar New Year holiday, when wait times peaked at nearly two hours, prompting concerns of an “immigration crisis.”
