Illegal Charges at Aadhaar Centers in Shravasti Spark Outrage

In Shravasti’s Bhinga town, allegations of illegal overcharging at Aadhaar card centers have sparked outrage. At the post office-operated Aadhaar center, services meant to be free are reportedly being provided for ₹150, while the BSNL-operated center charges between ₹250 and ₹500 for similar services.

Investigations revealed that even Aadhaar centers at banks and block offices in the district are openly charging customers more than the prescribed fees. When BSNL's SDO Naresh Maurya and responsible officials at the post office were informed, instead of taking action, they allegedly tried to suppress the matter.

The controversy comes despite clear directives from Shravasti District Magistrate Annapurna Garg, who recently chaired a meeting at the Collectorate Auditorium regarding Aadhaar enrollment and update services. Garg emphasized that no center should charge more than the prescribed fees and urged citizens to report violations to UIDAI’s helpline at 1947. She detailed the fee structure for Aadhaar services, including free registration for all age groups, free mandatory updates for children aged 5-7 and 15-17 until September 30, 2026, and charges of ₹125 for biometric updates and ₹75 for demographic updates like name, address, and mobile number. Online document updates remain free until June 14, 2026, after which a ₹75 fee will apply.

Despite these guidelines, residents complain of being exploited under the guise of service charges. Activists are demanding a thorough audit of all Aadhaar centers in the district, including checks on records and feedback from cardholders, followed by strict legal action against violators.

The issue highlights the need for better enforcement to protect citizens from being overcharged for essential services. Authorities are under pressure to act swiftly and ensure transparency at Aadhaar centers across Shravasti.
