HSBC sells Singapore insurance unit to Allianz for $2 billion

HSBC has announced a landmark agreement to sell its Singapore life and health insurance business to Germany's Allianz for S$2.7 billion (US$2.08 billion). The deal, revealed on Friday morning ahead of trading, includes a 15-year exclusive distribution partnership between HSBC Singapore and Allianz. The transaction is expected to conclude in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approval.

Financial Boost for HSBC

The disposal is projected to generate a pre-tax gain of US$1.8 billion for HSBC and improve its common equity tier 1 ratio by up to 15 basis points. This is a significant move as HSBC continues to streamline its global operations and focus on its core banking services. The bank will also receive an initial S$200 million cash payment under the bancassurance agreement, which allows Allianz to distribute its insurance products to HSBC Singapore's retail and high-net-worth clients.

Allianz Expands Its Footprint in Asia

Once the deal is finalised, Allianz will take full ownership of HSBC Life Singapore and retain all existing employees. This acquisition marks a strategic step for Allianz, enhancing its presence in the Asian insurance market, particularly in Singapore—a hub for financial services in the region.
