Barcelona, which had invested heavily in Messi—covering his hormone treatment costs and employing his father—believed convincing him to play for Spain would be straightforward. Messi’s loneliness in Spain, compounded by his family’s partial return to Argentina, seemed to make him a prime candidate for Spain’s national team.

Yet, Messi’s heart was unwavering. “I always said that I wanted to play for Argentina and I only feel these colours,” he later wrote.

Argentina’s Last-Minute Effort

The turning point came when Argentina’s youth coach Hugo Tocalli was reminded of Messi’s talent by Spain’s Cesc Fàbregas during a youth tournament. Tocalli recalled a VHS tape of Messi’s skills that had been sent to Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa. Bielsa, initially skeptical, was stunned by Messi’s speed and skill.

Realizing the urgency, national team manager Omar Souto launched a desperate search to contact Messi’s family. With no direct information, Souto resorted to calling every Messi in the phone book from a payphone booth. After an hour and numerous pesos spent, he finally reached Messi’s father, Jorge, who confirmed Messi’s eagerness to represent Argentina. Days later, the AFA formally requested Messi’s release from Barcelona, albeit with a misspelled name—“Leonel Mecci.”

A Legacy Secured

Messi made his youth debut for Argentina a year later and went on to become one of the greatest players in football history. Reflecting on Souto’s role, Messi wrote in 2025, “You were the person who paved the way for the AFA to spot me.”

This near-miss highlights the delicate interplay of identity and opportunity in Messi’s career. Though his style blends the creativity of Argentina with the discipline of Spain, his loyalty to his homeland has remained steadfast. Without that fateful payphone call, Messi might have lifted trophies for Spain instead of leading Argentina to World Cup glory.
