Polly Chan, a university administrative worker, exemplifies this trend. In 2023, she began renting a spacious 1,000 sq ft flat in Guangzhou for just 1,000 yuan (US$148) per month, seeking refuge from the cramped 300 sq ft apartment she shares with her mother in Tai Po during the workweek.

Weekend Sanctuary in Guangzhou

Chan’s Guangzhou flat offers her more than just extra space—it’s a personal haven where she indulges her passion for reading. The affordable rent is a stark contrast to housing costs in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, where prices for similar spaces can soar to 7,000 yuan per month. For Chan, whose monthly salary is HK$18,000, this arrangement provides financial breathing room while allowing her to maintain her career in Hong Kong.

Her decision also circumvents the high cost of mini-storage units in Hong Kong, where a single cubic foot of space can cost upwards of HK$1,000. Instead of paying for storage, Chan has found a way to preserve her collection of books and enjoy a better quality of life. “I am not renting storage space … I am paying for a tiny sliver of breathing room I have left,” she said.

Greater Bay Area’s Growing Appeal

The Greater Bay Area’s integration efforts are gradually breaking down traditional barriers for Hongkongers, offering access to cross-border networks and services. This shift is particularly appealing to individuals like Chan, who are eager to escape Hong Kong’s notoriously high housing costs and limited living space.
