Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing will introduce yuan-denominated gold futures early next year, adding a new commodities product to the city’s offshore yuan market plans, speakers at a banking summit said on Wednesday.
HKEX plans yuan gold futures
Bourse operator Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, or HKEX, will launch the contract as the city’s de facto central bank plans more yuan products and platforms to support the diversification and digitalisation of the currency’s internationalisation.
The plan was discussed at the Treasury Markets Summit 2026, which was attended by hundreds of bankers.
“We have recently reactivated our gold contract in the US dollar. But in the future, perhaps sometime early next year, we will be coming up with a yuan-denominated gold futures contract,” said Gregory Yu, managing director and head of markets at HKEX, at the summit.
Yu said HKEX would keep developing more offshore-yuan products linked to precious metals and other commodities.
“We will continue to build various precious metals and other commodities products denominated in offshore yuan,” he said.
Focus on offshore yuan activity
The move fits into a broader push to expand offshore market activity through gold, bond and liquidity plans tied to the next phase of yuan adoption.
The city’s de facto central bank is looking at new products and platforms as part of efforts to support the diversification and digitalisation of yuan internationalisation.
HKEX’s planned yuan-denominated gold futures would follow the recent reactivation of its US dollar gold contract, according to Yu’s remarks.
