Hong Kong's first standalone Chinese medicine hospital opens inpatient beds December 11

Hong Kong's Chinese Medicine Hospital will begin admitting inpatients round-the-clock from December 11, charging HK$980 (US$125) daily for subsidised beds—more than triple the HK$300 fee at conventional public acute wards.

The Tseung Kwan O facility, which opened last December as the city's first standalone traditional Chinese medicine hospital, announced on Tuesday that it will roll out 93 inpatient beds, split between 60 subsidised and 33 non-subsidised options, plus 20 beds in its clinical trial wing and two high-dependency units.

All-inclusive pricing versus public-hospital rates

The HK$980 daily rate is an all-in package covering room charges, consultations with registered Chinese medicine practitioners, herbal interventions, diagnostic tests and medication. By comparison, eligible patients pay HK$200 per day for convalescent, rehabilitation, infirmary and psychiatric beds in the public system.

Focus on complex cases and disease-specific programmes

The hospital treats more intricate conditions under a model that leads with Chinese medicine while integrating Western approaches where needed. Within the year, it will launch 10 new disease-specific programmes targeting ailments including eczema and Parkinson's disease.

The move marks the first time Hong Kong residents can access 24-hour traditional Chinese medicine inpatient care, a milestone for a sector that has historically operated mainly through outpatient clinics.
