Hong Kong police arrest 321 in seven-week drug sweep, seize 231kg narcotics

Hong Kong police have seized 231kg of suspected illegal drugs valued at HK$130 million and arrested 321 people during a seven-week anti-narcotics sweep that netted 28 minors, including a 13-year-old child.

The operation, code-named "Tailbacker," ran from July 12 to August 29 and uncovered 234 drug-related cases across the city. Suspects ranged in age from 13 to 72 and included 228 men, 65 women, and 28 minors. Among the underage suspects were 19 boys and nine girls, all under 18.

Major cocaine and ketamine haul

Officers confiscated 76kg of cocaine and 65kg of ketamine during the crackdown, alongside smaller quantities of heroin, cannabis, and methamphetamine. The arrests covered suspected offences including manufacturing, possession, and trafficking of dangerous drugs, as well as operating a drug den and possessing Part 1 poisons. Some suspects have already been formally charged.

Sharp rise in etomidate seizures

Police highlighted a significant increase in etomidate seizures compared with similar operations last year. The operation netted 3.7 litres of liquid etomidate and 6,400 etomidate vape pods. Etomidate, a sedative typically used in medical settings, has emerged as a substance of concern in Hong Kong's drug enforcement landscape.

Police announced the results on Sunday, marking the conclusion of one of the force's most extensive recent narcotics operations. The seven-week citywide effort reflects authorities' sustained focus on dismantling drug supply chains and deterring youth involvement in the illegal drug trade.
