Cary Adams, CEO of the Union for International Cancer Control, said Hong Kong is playing a central role in a broader regional hub for cancer research breakthroughs.
Adams made the remarks as the organisation held the World Cancer Congress in Hong Kong for the first time.
First World Cancer Congress in Hong Kong
The congress was held in late September, with Adams speaking to the South China Morning Post on the sidelines of the event.
He said the gathering was important for the organisation’s understanding of developments in both China and Hong Kong.
“We’ve all become aware globally that the centre of intense research and breakthrough is coming from this part of the world,” Adams said.
His comments place Hong Kong within a wider regional research landscape that is drawing attention from the international cancer community.
The Union for International Cancer Control’s decision to hold the congress in Hong Kong for the first time also brought its global organisation to a city it regards as important to understanding developments in the region.
Tobacco control held up as an example
Adams also praised Hong Kong’s tobacco control efforts.
The city’s success in reducing its smoking rate has set an example for others to follow, he said.
That record was highlighted alongside Hong Kong’s role in the regional research hub, linking public health efforts with the broader cancer response described by the organisation’s chief.
“It was important for us to be here so we can understand what is happening in China, what is happening in Hong Kong,” Adams said.
