HKU Virologist Escapes Conviction After MTR Station Assault Case

Vijaykrishna Dhanasekaran, a virologist at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), has been spared a criminal conviction after admitting to assaulting a man and damaging his mobile phone during an altercation at Hong Kong's MTR station last year. The Eastern Court on Friday placed the 48-year-old academic under a two-year bind-over order and instructed him to pay HK$800 in damages.

Court Issues Peace-Keeping Order

The incident, which occurred on August 17, 2025, involved a dispute between Dhanasekaran and Raimundo Kwok Chun-tung, a 56-year-old retiree, inside a lift connecting to the Airport Express. According to court proceedings, the argument escalated when Dhanasekaran began filming Kwok on his mobile phone. Kwok responded by recording Dhanasekaran in return. Tensions flared, leading to Dhanasekaran knocking Kwok’s Samsung Galaxy Note 20 to the ground, pushing him several times, and kicking the HK$3,000 phone out of the lift.

The court ordered Dhanasekaran to keep the peace for two years, warning that failure to comply could result in a HK$2,000 fine. The HK$800 compensation he was instructed to pay covers part of the damage caused to Kwok’s phone.

Context and Consequences

Dhanasekaran, who heads HKU’s pathogen evolution lab, avoided a criminal record, which could have had significant implications for his academic career. The bind-over order essentially allows him to walk free without formal charges, provided he adheres to the court’s conditions during the two-year period.

This case highlights the legal system’s approach to handling minor disputes, balancing accountability with leniency for first-time offenders. While Dhanasekaran’s actions were deemed inappropriate, the court opted for a resolution that avoids the long-term consequences of a conviction.
