Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh: Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavindra Gupta has expressed concern over the rising number of drug-related cases in the state, saying the continuing problem is emerging as a major future challenge for young people, families and society.

Gupta made the remarks during his one-day visit to Bilaspur, where he attended the Indian Excellence Award 2026 programme as the chief guest. The event was organised by an NGO at the HP Tourism Development Corporation’s Hotel Lakeview.

Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani was also present at the programme as a special guest.

The governor said that the growing drug problem in Himachal Pradesh required action not only from the government and the administration but also from social organisations. He stressed the need for collective efforts to work towards creating a drug-free society.

During the award ceremony, officials and social workers involved in work across different fields were honoured by the governor.

Those honoured at the event included Omkar Chand Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary in the Himachal Pradesh government; Kiran Bhadana, Deputy Commissioner of Bilaspur; and Abhishek Dhiman, Superintendent of Police, Bilaspur. Other officials, social workers and journalists were also recognised during the ceremony.

Focus on women and youth empowerment

Addressing the gathering, Governor Kavindra Gupta said that the positive thinking of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had resulted in Beti Bachao Beti Padhao becoming more than just a government campaign. He said it had become a subject of social awareness.

The governor also said that society needed to come forward against social evils such as female foeticide, gender discrimination, child marriage and violence against women.

Gupta said that government departments, the administration and social organisations all had a role to play in making women’s and youth empowerment a reality. He connected this effort with the wider need to address the drug problem and build a drug-free society in the state.

Appeal to protect natural resources

The governor also spoke about the need to take special steps to protect Himachal Pradesh’s natural beauty, resources, rivers and water sources.

He said these natural assets and heritage needed to be preserved for future generations. His remarks at the programme covered both the social challenges facing the state and the protection of its natural resources.

The event in Bilaspur brought together government officials, social workers and journalists, with the governor presenting honours to people who had been working in different areas.
