Ernakulam: Health Minister K. Muraleedharan inaugurated a series of development initiatives at Ernakulam General Hospital (GH) on Tuesday, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening public healthcare infrastructure.

Speaking at the event, the Minister lauded the hospital’s accomplishments in public health and reaffirmed the State government’s vision to elevate government hospitals to a level where they could rival private healthcare facilities.

New Facilities to Enhance Patient Care

Among the projects inaugurated were a tensile-roof walkway connecting the casualty and super-specialty blocks, a yard development and drainage system to prevent waterlogging during monsoons, and a new Gastroenterology department.

A state-of-the-art endoscopy theatre for the Gastroenterology department, funded through corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions, was also unveiled. The Minister honoured Dr. T. Paulose George for his voluntary service in the department.

Campaign to Promote Breastfeeding

In a bid to promote maternal and child health, Mr. Muraleedharan announced a year-long campaign titled ‘Tharatt.’ The initiative aims to educate mothers and the public on the significance of breastfeeding and encourage the establishment of breast milk banks.

The Minister also praised the hospital’s achievements in performing complex procedures like heart and kidney transplants and its model free food distribution programme, which provides doctor-prescribed healthy meals to patients.

Plans for Expansion and Upgrades

Addressing the hospital’s space constraints, the Minister expressed the government’s willingness to assist if the old Kochi Corporation building could be allocated for the hospital’s expansion. He also assured that steps would be taken to operationalise the K. Karunakaran Memorial Medical College and the Haripad Super Speciality Medical Institute.

Broader Health Sector Initiatives

Mr. Muraleedharan highlighted ongoing efforts to address gaps in healthcare infrastructure across the State. The Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society has been tasked with completing pending construction at the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. Additionally, an emergency meeting will be convened to resolve deficiencies at the Cochin Cancer Research Centre.

To tackle issues at the district level, health adalats have been initiated. These have already been conducted in Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kottayam, with Ernakulam’s session scheduled soon.

The Minister’s announcements underscore the State’s focus on improving public healthcare accessibility and quality, aiming to set benchmarks for other regions.
