Speaking at the opening of a national conference organised by the Indian chapter of the Asia Oceania Research Organisation in Genital Infection & Neoplasia (AOGIN) at the Government Medical College, Mr. Muraleedharan acknowledged that vaccination coverage had been falling short in some regions. The initiative aims to protect girls from cervical cancer, a preventable disease through timely immunisation.
Free vaccine under national drive
The HPV vaccine is currently being administered at no cost to 14-year-old girls at all government health centres as part of the national immunisation drive. Mr. Muraleedharan identified lack of awareness as one of the key reasons behind poor uptake and called on doctors to actively participate in efforts to increase coverage.
