Gun violence claims 12 lives in Thailand's Nonthaburi in three weeks

Thailand’s struggle with gun violence has come into sharp focus as Nonthaburi province, near Bangkok, reels from a spate of deadly shootings. The latest incident occurred Monday morning when a former Member of Parliament (MP) shot and killed a local official in what police say was a dispute over money. The victim, Police Colonel Thongchai Yenprasert, became the 12th person to die from gun violence in the province in less than three weeks.

Former MP Confesses to Killing Over Money Dispute

The alleged shooter, 71-year-old Chalong Riewrang, is a three-time lawmaker with significant political clout. According to authorities, Chalong fired four rounds at Thongchai while the latter was seated in a car. After the attack, Chalong reportedly called a television host to confess to the crime, underscoring the brazenness of the act.

A String of Shootings in a Small Province

Nonthaburi, a province with a population of just 250,000, has been rocked by a series of violent incidents over the past month. On July 21, a young man was fatally shot by a masked gunman on a motorbike in Pak Kret. Just a week later, a former bank manager opened fire during a land dispute, killing two relatives and injuring four others.

The alarming frequency of shootings in Nonthaburi highlights Thailand’s broader struggle to address gun crime. Despite its relatively small size, the province has witnessed a surge in violence that reflects a troubling national trend.
