Grassroots Singer Hou Rises to Fame After Saving Delayed Hacken Lee Concert

Hou took the stage with zero rehearsal and no teleprompter, giving an impromptu two-hour set in place of Hong Kong singer Hacken Lee. The performance helped the grassroots singer in China rise to fame after Lee was delayed.

Concert was held in Baotou

On the evening of September 26, the touring concert Hear Yourself was held in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, in northern China, Shenzhen TV reported. The concert featured six acclaimed singers from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Lee was scheduled to give the grand finale performance, but he did not arrive in time. His flight, originally bound for the nearby city of Hohhot, had to land in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, because of hail.

Lee and his colleagues then took a taxi from Taiyuan to Baotou, a journey of 570km. Their travel was delayed again when the electric car they were travelling in ran out of power along the way. They were forced to spend a long time finding another ride.

Hou reached the stadium in time

As the concert faced the delay, Hou rushed to the stadium by taxi and shared bicycle, reaching it just in time to perform. He then stood in for Lee without rehearsal or a teleprompter.

His two-hour appearance allowed the delayed concert to continue and brought him widespread attention, according to the source account. The episode also marked his rise from a grassroots singer to a newly recognised performer in China.
