government extends tenures of Cabinet Secretary and Home Secretary by one year

In a significant administrative decision, the government has extended the tenures of Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan by one year. The orders, issued on Wednesday, were approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Extensions Beyond Standard Terms

Govind Mohan, a 1989 batch IAS officer from the Sikkim cadre, will continue as Home Secretary until August 22, 2027. His original tenure, which began on August 23, 2024, was set to end this month. The extension required relaxation of provisions under Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.

Similarly, T.V. Somanathan, a 1987 batch IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, will serve as Cabinet Secretary until August 30, 2027. He was initially appointed to the position for two years in August 2024.

The Cabinet Secretary, as the senior-most civil servant, coordinates across ministries and advises the Prime Minister.
