The family of Tapan Chaudhary, a married woman who died under suspicious circumstances in Muzaffarnagar, has accused Vikal Kumar, a resident of the village, of murder. The case has also raised serious questions over the functioning of the police and administration.
According to the family, Tapan Chaudhary left home on 22 October. On 23 October, the family received the news of her death at a medical college.
The family has alleged that there were serious injury marks on her body. It claimed that injuries were visible on her hands and legs, as well as above her eye. The family also claimed that the body had turned blue.
Despite these allegations, the family says it is still waiting for justice. Tapan Chaudhary’s husband, Ankit Kumar, accused Vikal Kumar of killing her.
A written complaint alleging murder was submitted at Nai Mandi police station on 26 October. The family has alleged that no action had been taken by 31 October.
The family has also questioned why the accused had not been arrested even after nine days. It said the delay had brought the police’s working under scrutiny.
Questions have been raised over what the police have found so far in the investigation into the murder allegation. The family is also seeking an explanation from the administration on the examination of the injury marks and the post-mortem report.
Relatives reached the Senior Superintendent of Police’s office along with hundreds of villagers, seeking justice. The deceased woman’s sister, Shivani, questioned the police action.
The family has given the police an ultimatum of two days. It warned that a sit-in would be held if an arrest was not made.
The family has asked why, while it continues to visit the SSP office, the law-enforcement authorities have still not shown any concrete result in the case.
