Engineering, management courses offer diverse career opportunities, says Expert

A career guidance session for final-year B.Tech students at Tirumala Engineering College, Narasaraopet, focused on career routes spanning traditional industries, emerging technologies, research and business leadership, Dr. Mitrabarun Ghosh said.

Dr. Ghosh, Assistant Professor at Paari School of Business, SRM University-A.P., delivered the session titled “Career Directions: Engineering & Management” on Wednesday.

He told students that the choice between technical careers and management education should be based on their interests, skills and long-term aspirations, rather than on the assumption that one path is inherently superior.

Technical and management paths

Engineering can lead to opportunities in technology, research, design and innovation, while management education can open avenues in leadership, strategy, marketing, finance and business operations, Dr. Ghosh explained.

He also said that combining engineering experience with an MBA could help graduates pursue careers in product management, consulting and leadership roles.

The discussion covered employment opportunities in information technology, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, semiconductors, manufacturing and global capability centres.

Government career options were also discussed, including opportunities through GATE, UPSC Engineering Services, ISRO, DRDO, Indian Railways and public sector undertakings.

Emerging sectors and alternative careers

Dr. Ghosh drew attention to emerging sectors such as electric vehicles, green energy, space technology, defence startups and chip design.

He also explained that students could consider alternative career options in technical writing, patent analysis, research, public policy and entrepreneurship.

These options broaden the choices available to students beyond conventional engineering and management roles, while allowing them to assess careers according to their skills and aspirations.

Higher education opportunities in India and abroad were also covered, with Dr. Ghosh referring to examinations such as GATE, CAT, GRE and GMAT.

Guidance on choosing colleges

The seminar on “Careers in Management & Sciences” was organised by The Hindu Future India Club in association with Paari School of Business, SRM A.P., in collaboration with Tirumala Engineering College.

R. Satyanarayana, Secretary and Correspondent of Tirumala Engineering College, Dr. Y.V. Narayana, Principal, and V.V.S. Pradeep of SRM University were present at the programme.

Dr. Ghosh advised students to assess institutional rankings, accreditation, placement records, faculty expertise, industry connections and return on investment while selecting colleges.

He encouraged them to identify a primary career path and a backup option, prepare strategically for competitive examinations, and strengthen their profiles through projects, internships and certifications.

The guidance linked career planning with both immediate preparation and longer-term decisions about higher education, specialisation and professional development.
