Palakkad rail division row sparks challenge for indefinite Delhi hunger strike

CPM district secretary E.N. Suresh Babu has challenged Congress MP V.K. Sreekandan to stage an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Railway Ministry in Delhi if he is serious about opposing the transfer of Mangaluru from Palakkad rail division.

The gauntlet came as the proposed bifurcation of the Palakkad railway division triggered a political slugfest between the two parties. Suresh Babu also called on the Congress to launch a strong agitation against the Centre.

MP hits back, accuses CPM of fearing BJP

Sreekandan dismissed the challenge, saying those with the courage to protest should take on the BJP instead of targeting him. He accused CPI(M) leaders of being afraid of the BJP and said they were attacking him instead of protesting against the Centre.

The Congress MP also alleged that the CPI(M) was trying to mislead people over railway development in Palakkad.

BJP slams both fronts over political mudslinging

The BJP criticised both the Congress and CPI(M) for trading accusations over the issue. The party said the two fronts were trying to turn the matter into a political controversy instead of explaining the facts behind the Centre's decision.

With protests against the division continuing, the railway issue is emerging as a new point of confrontation among the political parties in the State.
